Setting Goals

In our neck of the woods we have a lot of hunters. There is the bow season, the rifle season, the muzzleloader season, etc. And that’s just for deer hunting.

Before these seasons you can find any number of people out sighting in their bows, rifles and muzzleloaders. They set up a target, move back many paces then shoot into the target to insure their bow, rifle or muzzleloader is shooting straight. With this practice, they can ‘sight in’ their weapon and be assured that they’ll hit what they’re aiming at when the time comes.

In our little community, we have an annual turkey shoot. We don’t shoot real turkeys. They are large cardboard cut-outs of turkeys with a target taped to it. We have a little competition. We have men against women, young against old, etc. Then we have a big chili cook off. It’s an annual event that has begun to draw those with vacation homes to come back year after year.

We should always have something we’re aiming at. If we didn’t have a target, we’d never come close to hitting it. And think about all the good things that surround trying to hit that target, the companionship, the community, even the food and fun competition.

If you don’t have something you’re trying to hit in your life, a goal, a target, something you really want then you’ll never achieve it. You’ll wander aimlessly. Anything of worth you accomplish will be by accident. The key is having a target (goals) . . . and practice.

And remember, no one ever hits the bull’s eye the first time around except by blind luck. It takes constant effort.

You also have all the good things that surround trying to reach your goal: the companionship, the community, even the food and fun competition.
