Going For It
Life can be like baseball. It’s a game you play to win. It’s a team sport with rules. There are stats and scores and different strategies. And then there’s the opposing team who’s also trying to win.
When the other team is at bat, they can score. You’re on defense. You have to watch everything closely in order to counter their strategy. Everyone around you has to pull their weight and so do you. You’re interdependent. When you’ve surrounded yourself with a good team, each highly skilled at their positions, you’re more apt to win.
When your team is at bat, you’re on offense and can score. There are myriad ways to achieve this. Among them is the bunt, base hit, line drive, steal, sacrifice fly, and home run.
The home run brings a sure score, but it’s statistically unlikely. You can’t win games by every batter trying for a home run. The pitcher will catch on and alter his throws to counter.
If your team is smart, you’ll have a manager who is watching closely and leading how you play. You’ll also employ base coaches to observe the other team’s defense and give signs as you’re at bat or running the bases, helping you have the best chance of scoring.
When you’re at the plate, you’ll get signs from the coach telling you which strategy to employ. Then it’s up to your skill as a batter. Remember, you won’t be perfect. In fact, you won’t get a hit most of the time. Make the most of the times you do.
Once in a while, you’ll have a feeling at the plate. Your coach may give you the bunt sign, but if you see the right pitch coming straight down the middle, you have to take the opportunity and swing for the fence.
If you get the home run, then wow! You’re a hero. You may even have won the game.
But when all is said and done, if you strike out, remember, you’ll come up to bat again. If your team doesn’t win this game, there are others.
If you’ve played your best, you can be satisfied and have a great time. There are other games. Winning is only part of the joy. It’s also about how much you enjoyed playing.
