How To Make Good Decisions

Making good decisions is critical to a successful life. Too often we make bad decisions simply because we don’t know the process for making good ones. Below is a simple process you can follow in making good decisions:

1. Determine what your final objective is. What does your final objective look like? Be specific, but broad. Rather than ask “should I take this new job?” Instead ask “What type of lifestyle would I like to have?” Instead of asking “Where should we go on vacation this year?” ask “What is the best thing we can do for family recreation and bonding this year?” You have to ask the right questions in order to get the right answers.

2. Recognize that big decisions are often a compilation of many small and simple decisions. Break big decisions down into their smallest and simplest component parts. Write each of the smaller decision points down in the form of questions and address them one at a time. This keeps you from being overwhelmed by too much information.

3. Make sure each smaller decision you make leads toward your desired overall objective. If it doesn’t, you know you’ve made a wrong decision. Change your decision until it leads you back toward your final objective.

4. Spend proportionate time and effort based on the size and importance of your decision ie. Spend little time on decisions of little consequence and more time on decisions of greater consequence.

5. Many decisions aren’t between right and wrong, good or evil, but choosing the best among many reasonable alternatives. Stay focused on your overall objective and you’ll often immediately know which alternative would be ‘best,’ leading you toward your ultimate objective.

6. Discuss your decision and the reasoning behind it with a few trusted peers. Don’t discuss it with more than 4 people. Listen to their advice.

7. Don’t second guess yourself. If each of your smaller decisions leads toward your final objective then you’re on the right path. Stay the course. Often minor obstacles or simple fear makes you want to change course. Don’t do it!
