The Secret to Finding Joy
Many years ago I was in a meeting with about 300 other eager young people embarking upon the grand adventure of life. It was a meeting where we were to receive instruction on how to be successful and productive in our chosen endeavors. We all sat, rapt, ready to take notes and drink in the wisdom which would be offered.
The presenter was well known, respected in his field, and quite successful in whatever he put his hand to. He was accomplished, articulate, and prosperous.
When he began we were on the edge of our seats. He stated he was going to teach us the secret to finding joy.
What? What’s this about finding joy? We were there to learn about how to be successful, not about how to find joy.
Then he explained. You aren’t really successful until you find joy. And if you find joy in your life – true joy– then you are successful no matter what you do, how much you earn, or where you live.
Having joy is the truest measure of success. True joy is what makes life worth living. True joy is what brings meaning to your life. If you’re just chasing money or fame, even if you find it, it ends up being hollow and empty unless you’ve done something more, something which brings joy along the way.
Joy is not selfish, like in seeking pleasure. Joy is in being happy, but deeper, richer. Joy is serving. Joy is helping and lifting. Joy comes in doing something meaningful with the abilities and talents God has granted.
“Here then, is the secret to finding joy,” he said. “Live as close to your ideal self as you possibly can.”
